The 12 Months of "I'll Figure It Out Myself": Angus's Road to $20K Recurring

Every testimonial page has a story from someone who joined fast. This one is for everyone else: the skeptics. Angus heard the pitch, decided it was too good to be true, and disappeared for a year to prove he could do it himself.

He tells the whole thing in the interview above, filmed in person at our Noosa mastermind.

"Total BS"

Angus came out of a big role in media, still doing contract work for networks, while his own video business went nowhere.

"I remember first meeting with you and you're saying, I'll be able to get you X clients, talking about it as if it was going to be such an easy thing. And all I could think in my head was: total BS. I went ghost for about six months and thought, no, I'll just go away and do all this stuff myself. I don't need someone to show me how to grow my business."

It was closer to twelve months. His honest scorecard on that year alone:

"Nothing had happened in my business in those twelve months. I had gone absolutely nowhere. So I eventually decided to bite the bullet, and it was definitely the best decision I'd ever made for my business."

What Actually Changed

The first shift wasn't ads or funnels. It was having something to sell.

"Back in the day, people would reach out randomly and say, I want this video done, and it'd just be, yeah, sure. There was no direction or strategy, no 'here's what I'm going to do for your business, here's what it's going to get your business.' Knowing how to put those packages together and start selling them allowed me to see this could work as a full-time business."

Selling packages gave him the confidence and the cash to go full-time. Then came the model that changed the maths: retainers. He hated sales calls at first, and says so. He's comfortable on them now.

From Zero Recurring to $20K a Month

Two years in, the picture is specific.

"We're sitting at about $20K recurring per month, with six or seven clients on a retainer model. As a business we had zero income we knew we were going to be getting every month. Now we know that twenty is coming in every month, and it allows us to think about the next steps and build our team from here."

The Part That Matters More Than the Number

Angus is a father of three. What recurring revenue actually bought him is the reason most agency owners with families will recognise instantly.

"If I was still stuck in a job, I'm chained to a desk nine to five. If my son's got an athletics carnival on a Friday morning, I would never be able to go. I now have that freedom to run my own life how I want."

"When you become a parent, the biggest thing that keeps you up at night is: am I going to be able to provide for my wife and my kids? That will literally take years off your life. Having monthly recurring revenue, being able to sleep at night, will make you a better human and a better dad. More present."

His Advice to the Fence-Sitters

Coming from the man who sat on the fence longer than almost anyone:

"I was very skeptical, in quite a negative headspace, and when you're in that mind frame you put a lot of limiting beliefs on what's possible. When someone tells you $20K, $30K a month is very possible in the next twelve months, I understand that can be a hard thing to believe. But I'd definitely say to anyone on the fence: give it a go. I don't see how anyone could not succeed using the skills."

And the bonus he didn't expect: the skills transfer. "Running ad campaigns, creating funnels, these are all things I now go and do for my clients. They're not just skills to sell video. They're skills that help you run your own business day to day."

His message to his past self, still sitting on that fence: "Do it right now. I often think how much further along I'd be if I'd jumped on twelve months prior. Total wasted time. I'd kick myself and say just do it."

The Lesson

Angus's year of going it alone cost him nothing except the one thing you can't get back. The skepticism was reasonable, the numbers did sound too good, and the only evidence that settled it was his own: twelve months solo produced nothing, and two years with a system produced $20K a month he can count on. If you're the analytical, skeptical type, his story is the control group you've been asking for.
