Five Years In, Still Doing All the Work: How Joe Restructured Brown Fox Creative House

Most of our case studies start with someone stuck at the beginning. Joe's starts somewhere different: five years in, multiple six figures a year, a real agency. And still doing more than 80% of the client work himself.

Joseph runs Brown Fox Creative House, a creative agency in Brisbane he's built over six and a half years. This is his version of the last twelve months, from the interview above, filmed at one of our masterminds.

The Five-Year Trap

Joe had spent years believing the goal was simply to survive to year five. Then he got there.

"I was always thinking that the goal was to make it to 5 years. And as soon as I hit there I realized, oh, there's still more to do. There's still a business to build. It doesn't just end. I need some help."

The business ran entirely on word of mouth. He'd stopped regular networking, which meant the one channel feeding the agency was drying up by his own hand. "We were changing our entire strategy of getting business. I didn't know how to do it properly anywhere else. It wasn't predictable."

He'd already worked with two business coaches. Both were generalists. "They were only able to take me and our agency to a certain point before I realized I needed to work with someone who knew video businesses." He noticed the agency owners he followed had a common thread in who they were learning from, and reached out.

The System, Handed Over

Joe's first problem was lead generation beyond referrals. He'd tried paid ads before, like most agency owners, and never made them work. And five years into running a live business, he didn't have a hundred spare hours to figure it out from scratch.

"Not only did you know how to teach it, you gave it to us. 'Here is the system.' Pre-built, ready to go. I could literally just start using it, and quite literally straight away it started showing results in terms of getting new leads."

He's honest about what came next, and it's worth hearing if you're considering ads yourself: leads arriving is not the same as deals closing. "Selling to a cold audience is nothing like selling to someone who's been referred. It's been a journey from that point to learn how to sell cold clients. Still learning some things. But the system worked to get leads in the door."

More Than Lead Gen

The part Joe kept coming back to wasn't ads. It was the roadmap: the full picture of how an agency should run, assessed honestly, area by area.

"It wasn't just lead gen anymore. It was how to convert the clients. It was how to become a CEO and build scalable systems, and functional days off in my week. Things that I never even thought about. No one had told me that's something to think about."

At each mastermind, members re-score their agency across the roadmap. "For me to think about what I was filling out a year ago to what I was filling out now, I realized I'd actually been able to tick a lot more boxes than I thought I had. It's given the road map."

The Number That Changed: His Time

Joe tracks his own hours, task by task. That makes his before-and-after unusually concrete.

"Half of my job in the business at the moment is marketing and sales, whereas it used to be 80% plus client work two, three years ago. I can tell, based off percentages, if I'm actually spending my time in the right area of the business now."

He still steps into client delivery when it makes sense. The difference is that building the business is now the job, not the thing squeezed around the edges of it.

His Advice If You're Analytical Like Him

"If you're looking for a road map for how to build the business, then absolutely, working with you has been exactly that. It doesn't mean all of your problems get solved, but you know what you have to do. You get clarity on what area of the business to focus on at that time."

And on the fence-sitters watching every testimonial the way he once did:

"It is a no-brainer. If you are a video business agency owner wanting to scale, it just makes sense. The whole thing is virtually plug-and-play, you get to meet cool people, and you get access to really high quality coaching."

Asked what almost stopped him from signing up, his answer was the sharpest line of the interview: "It would have been if I had thought about it." He'd done his research before the call, knew his decision, and signed up on the spot.

The Lesson

Surviving five years proves your craft. It doesn't build the machine. Joe's ceiling wasn't skill or reputation, it was that the founder was the delivery department, and referrals were the entire pipeline. Twelve months of installing systems moved him from 80% client work to spending half his week where an owner belongs: on demand, on sales, and on the business itself.
